RATES
Indexers can charge by the page, by the hour, by entry (definition varies), or by project. My preferred method is by indexable page. Indexable pages include the introduction, main body of text, illustrations, and endnotes that contain substantive material; they exclude front matter, such as tables of contents, and back matter, such as glossaries, references, and appendices, although sometimes there are exceptions. My rate varies depending on the type of material - the level of detail needed and its complexity - and the time allowed. It can range from $3.00 to $6.00 per page. In order to determine the rate it is helpful to see a representative sample of the text.
